6061 has more alloying elements than 6063. They are both medium strength
aluminum alloys with good corrosion resistance, good weldability and
good processability. 6063 extruded material is used more often, focusing
on construction profiles or relatively complex shapes, while 6061 is
mainly used in forgings and plates. It should be said that the essence
of the distinction is not obvious, the user mainly depends on whether it
can be used, whether the price is low.

The main alloy elements of 6063 aluminum alloy are magnesium and
silicon. It has good processing performance, excellent weldability,
extrudability and plating, good corrosion resistance, toughness. It is
easy to be polished, coated and anodized, and is a typical extrusion
alloy. Widely used in construction profiles, irrigation pipes, for
vehicles, pedestals, furniture, lifts, fences, etc. with tubes, bars,
profiles 6063 is generally used in construction profiles.
The main alloying elements of 6061 aluminum alloy are magnesium and
silicon, and form the Mg2Si phase. If it contains a certain amount of
manganese and chromium, it can neutralize the bad effect of iron;
sometimes a small amount of copper or zinc is added to improve the
strength of the alloy without making its corrosion resistance
significantly reduced; there is a small amount of copper in the
conductive material to offset the bad effect of titanium and iron on the
conductivity; zirconium or titanium can refine the grain and control the
recrystallization organization; in order to improve the machinability,
lead and bismuth can be added. In Mg2Si, the Mg/Si ratio is 1.73. In the
heat-treated state, Mg2Si is solidly fused in aluminum, which gives the
alloy an artificial age-hardening function.
6061 is required for various industrial structures with high strength,
weldability and corrosion resistance, such as tubes, bars, shapes and
plates for trucks, towers, ships, trams, furniture, mechanical parts,
precision machining, etc.
