Pure vanadium granules
Vanadium is a soft, shiny, silvery metal that is
found in many different minerals, including crude oils. It occurs in the
earth's crust with a frequency of 160 ppm and can be isolated with
aluminum after conversion into the pentoxide V2O5 and subsequent
reduction. High-purity vanadium can be obtained in the Van Arkel
process, in which the iodide is thermally decomposed on a hot metal
wire. Pure vanadium is corrosion-resistant due to the protective oxide
layer on its surface; it is attacked by concentrated acids, but not by
molten alkalis.
